It is crucial that you read through as much as you possibly can and have specific questions prepared prior to coming to your first practice. We want to ensure that everyone gets going in the right direction and enjoys their time with us. We are looking forward to a fantastic season!
Practice Schedule
Our practice schedule should stay relatively the same throughout the year. However, changes do happen, and times may shift based on who is in the pool at that time (aerobics, swim meets, ML events, etc.). The monthly outlook that will be posted to the home page of the website will always be the MOST up-to-date documents that we have.

Monthly Team Fees
Our team fees are separated based on which group you are in. Please keep in mind that monthly fees are entirely separate from the annual registration fee as well as the annual USAS membership.
Families will have the option to register and pay either through our website or in person at the membership desk. Simply place the appropriate item in your cart based on the group your swimmer is in and proceed to checkout. If at any point in time you fall behind on payments or have unpaid meet fees, the staff at the front desk will inform you upon scanning in for practice or events.
If your child moves up to a group that costs more, the coaching staff will be sure to address the move with the family prior to it happening in order to ensure any future planning can be done.
+ NAVY/GOLD → $125
+ FLYERS/WHITE → $75
*Please note that these monthly fees DO NOT include the yearly registration fee ($40) and the yearly USAS registration fee
Groups Defined
Our team is separated into groups based on ability, experience, and overall swimming goals. By doing this, we are able to teach in a much more effective manner by ensuring swimmers do not feel as if they cannot keep up or the complete opposite – they are not being challenged enough.
Each group will have its own primary coach, but we do share coaches from time to time due to scheduling conflicts, similar practice focus, or simply to keep things fresh just to name a few.
It is important to note that all groups are fluid and can change from time to time. If we recognize that your swimmer is in a position to move up a group, then a member of the coaching staff will have that conversation with the family prior to making the move as we know that can change things when it comes to planning. Another example would be that we will move swimmers to other groups if that group is working on something that will greatly benefit the swimmer at that specific time.
Below you will find each group explained in more detail, what the expectations are, and what each swimmer needs to do in order to move groups if the desire is there. You will also find the equipment list for each group.
EQUIPMENT LIST:
FLYERS → Goggles, Cap, Kickboard, Arena Junior Fin
WHITE → Goggles, Cap, Kickboard, Arena Junior/Power Fin, Snorkel
NAVY → Goggles, Cap, Kickboard, Arena Power Fin, Snorkel, Pull Buoy, Paddles
GOLD → Goggles, Cap, Kickboard, Arena Power Fin, Snorkel, Pull Buoy, Paddles
*All groups will also want to purchase a mesh equipment bag to carry their stuff back and forth from practice. Each training group has a set list of training equipment specific to that group. All training equipment can be purchased through any other website that has the correct items listed. Feel free to shop the best deal but our primary brand is Arena.
FLYERS GROUP:
+ PRACTICE DAYS → Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
+ Must be able to complete the following:
– Swim a full 25 of freestyle and backstroke without stopping
+ Key Focus Areas:
– Developing all 4 strokes
– Pushing off in streamline correctly
– Diving
– Circle Swimming
– Basic “clock work” knowledge
*This is primarily known as our “beginner” group and where all the fun begins! Everything is brand new and basic skills are taught on a daily basis. While some things may seem a bit repetitive, it is during this time that your swimmer should be perfecting the technical aspect of each skill or stroke. The main focus is on developing their ability to at least recognize all 4 strokes and begin working towards swimming them legally. It is also at this time that we begin talking about what it means to use these 4 strokes in a race. Meets are not mandatory for anyone swimming in this group but can be requested by the family.
WHITE GROUP:
+ PRACTICE DAYS → Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
+ Must be able to complete the following:
– Swim all 4 strokes legally on a fairly consistent basis
– Complete a 100 IM without stopping
– Be able to complete a dive, flip turn and open turn
+ Key Focus Areas:
– Enhancing all 4 strokes
– Begin working towards completing some IMR + IMX Events
IMR → 100 FR, 50 BK, 50 BR, 50 FL, 100 IM
IMX → 200 FR, 100 BK, 100 BR, 100 FL, 200 IM
– Completing basic sets using the pace clock
– Begin working through more involved sets independently
*This is the next group up from FLYERS. Swimmers in the WHITE group have made it through being able to swim all four strokes on a consistent basis legally and are on their way to learning how to make it through a set using the clock independently from the coaches. Swimmers are encouraged to begin racing more often as well as trying out new events. We begin talking through the different events and what it takes to complete them as well as what the expectations are at meets. It is during this time that the swimmers are challenged from time to time with more involved sets and higher expectations for practice while a massive emphasis on fun is still promoted!
NAVY GROUP:
+ PRACTICE DAYS → Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
+ Must be able to complete the following:
– Complete a 200 IM without stopping
– Have competed in the majority of all IMR/IMX Events
– Be able to work independently through involved sets
– Focused on making AG Sectionals, Southeasterns, or State cuts
+ Key Focus Areas:
– Developing the ability to complete longer and more involved sets ranging
through all 4 strokes
– Developing the understanding of more advanced skills and drills
– Active participation in ALL meets
*This is our last group prior to getting to our top group (GOLD). NAVY group is all about improving our overall fitness and swimming ability while enhancing our ability to race effectively. By this time, most swimmers in this group will have competed in almost every event that is offered and are beginning to gain more knowledge about each race. This is also a time where many swimmers choose which type of swimmer they really want to be. Practice and meets should be attended on a regular basis while in this group as the practices become more involved and build on one another based on where we are in the season.
GOLD GROUP:
+ PRACTICE DAYS → Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
+ Must be able to complete the following:
– Consistent commitment to both practice and meets
– Have an overall positive attitude that contributes to the group
– Be realistically working towards scoring at Southeasterns
+ Key Focus Areas:
– Enhancing all 4 strokes
– Competing in ALL events across all distances
– Training the overall body in different energy systems
*This is our top group and the most advanced group on the team. GOLD is comprised primarily of swimmers that legitimately WANT to swim every day. They come to practice because THEY want to as opposed to being made to and contribute to practice in a positive manner. It is during this time that we really focus on improving specific events while still making sure that we know how to compete across all events. Swimmers in this group are expected to take on more accountability and are responsible for letting coaches know when they will not be able to practice. Practice and meets should all be attended unless there is a legitimate conflict.
Contact Information
Please do not ever hesitate to reach out. Our coaching staff, just like any other staff, has a life away from the pool so please be sure to use our contact information respectfully. However, we know there will always be questions, and we want to be sure to answer them in any way we can!

Communication
Communication is very important to us and while we always feel like we can do more, there are several avenues that are already established in order to assist in making sure everyone stays on the same page. Below are our preferred forms of communication and ones that we use on a regular basis.
+ WEBSITE → MorristownLanding.com → “Aquatics”
– Our website is used for mapping out the entirety of the season. It is also where you can find general updates regarding practice schedules, meets, team events, and general team information. Our website is a living document and will change from time to time!
+ WHATSAPP → FLYERS WHATSAPP
– WhatsApp is what we use for urgent updates or reminders. Typically speaking, updates will come out via WhatsApp if practice has had to be canceled for whatever reason or we have to shift something that we already have planned, and the website will not serve as fast enough communication. It is also where we will update swimmers that are at meets regarding general timelines or change. You can also follow the QR code to be added to the group.
+ FLYER’S DIGEST → Visit Our Flyers Digest Page
– This is our MONTHLY Outlook that will be uploaded to the website 1 WEEK prior to the upcoming month. It is just a one-sheeter that provides the monthly updates such as changes to the practice schedule, a few items from the coaches as to what everyone is working on, important upcoming dates, and anything else that we want to address on a wide scale with the team. Be sure to check it out each month!
Team Policies
With the Morristown Landing Flyers, we are always trying to ensure that we provide a safe and enjoyable environment for our families. With that comes the need for a few team policies that we want to make all our members aware of.
Locker Room Policy → The locker rooms can be accessed from both the hallway outside of the pool area as well as from on the pool deck. NOTHING is to be left in the locker room after practice. The locker rooms are also ONLY meant for changing in and out of your swim attire. It is a privilege to use the locker rooms, and we want to ensure that we are able to continue using them.
Athletes ONLY on pool deck → This is of course during actual practice times. Due to the facility still being open while we are practicing, we want to ensure everyone has space to function. Therefore, we ask ALL of our spectators to please sit in the grandstands during practice. This also allows us to give our undivided attention to the swimmers during practice times.
ALWAYS BE READY → All athletes should be ready to go with their proper equipment at the start of practice time. This also applies to warmups at swim meets.
Practice gets BUSY → We politely ask for all parents/guardians to avoid talking to coaches during practice. It is crucial for us to stay entirely focused on our swimmers throughout each practice and the more conversation we have with parents, the less coaching we are doing during practice times. Coaches will always be available before and after practice to discuss anything pertinent.
FAQ
We get a million questions before, during, and after practice. Some are ones that we have never heard before while others, we hear all the time. Therefore, we have put together this list to hopefully help steer individuals in the right direction.
What is the first thing to do after deciding to begin swimming?
Parents of new swimmers… PLEASE contact our Head Coach, Benjamin Young, before registering your swimmer(s). There are several different options throughout the registration process, and it also allows for parents to ask any questions they may have that may be exclusive to them. Having an initial conversation can also assist with ensuring your swimmer(s) are placed in the correct group prior to coming to practice.
What is the difference between Short Course and Long Course?
The USA’s swim seasons are primarily split into two separate seasons – one being short course while the other being long course. Short course season is typically from August to March while the long course season ranges from March to August. If you are competing in a long course pool, then it means one length of the pool is 50 meters (think Olympics). If you are competing in a meet that says it is short course, then one length of the pool is 25 yards (think Carson-Newman’s pool).
What is CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON?
This portion of the season is typically the last part of any season that focuses solely on piecing everything together one final time. At this point in the season, we are slowly, but surely, beginning to rest a bit and focus on GOING FAST! Some “championship-level” meets are our LSC’s Southeastern Championship Meet or Age-Group Sectionals. Both meets have qualifying times attached to them.
My child wants to swim at a meet… What’s next?
If your swimmer would like to participate in a meet, head over to the MEETS + EVENTS tab on our website and RSVP for that specific meet. A coach will then be sure to speak with all involved parties as to what events he or she may swim.
What are MEET FEES?
Meets fees will be sent out prior to the start of each meet. When signing up for events at a meet, there are usually 3 main fees: event fees, LSC surcharge, and a facility fee. For example, let’s say you sign up for 6 events and each event is $10. The event fee portion of your invoice will $60. The LSC surcharge is typically $4, and the facility fee is $20. For that meet, your invoice total would be $84.
*MEET FEES MUST BE PAID IN FULL PRIOR TO SIGNING UP FOR ANOTHER MEET
What is a sanctioned meet?
A sanctioned meet is classified as any meet with certified officials overseeing each event AND has been approved by USA Swimming based on its guidelines. Any time swum at a sanctioned meet is then submitted to the USA Swimming database to be used for future events. For example, GKAISA City Meet IS a sanctioned meet due to the levels of officials and the adherence to USAS guidelines. Each Summer League dual meet is NOT a sanctioned meet due to each pool/official not meeting all USAS requirements.
What is a time standard and how do I know what they are?
There are several different types of time standards in USAS. Motivational times are posted on USA Swimming’s website and are divided into the following categories: B, BB, A, AA, AAA, AAAA. Furthermore, time standards provided for specific meets, such as Southeastern Champs and AG Sectionals, are times that a swimmer MUST go in order to enter that meet.
